What is Digital Photography?

What is digital photography?

Before the invention of digital photography, cameras exposed film to light to make images. Now digital cameras use digital technology to make images. Image sensors record the light that enters the camera just as film does in film cameras. Then the information recorded by the senor is stored in the camera on a storage device. There are a variety of storages methods used by cameras. They include:

  • Compact Flash
  • Memory Sticks
  • Secure Digital and Multimedia Cards
  • xD Picture Cards

These images are stored until they can be transferred to a computer or printed directly from the camera by attaching it to a printer.

Once on the computer the images can be manipulated in digital editing software. You can change the colors, crop pictures, add new elements to the photograph or even take things out of the photograph.

No film is used in the digital photography process. There is no need to take film to be processed. There are places that will print your pictures out for you if you don't want to print them out yourself. Many stores have digital photography printing services.

You can also join online communities, like Flickr or Shutterfly, to share your photographs with family, friends and even strangers. These communities also have services you can order prints through.

Digital photography is increasing in popularity every year. Now most cell phones contain a digital camera. People are taking and sharing more pictures than every before.
