Tripod heads are an often ignored element of photo gear. There are two types of heads: the pan head and the ball head. Let's look at each type and what to consider before you purchase one.
Pan Heads
The most common type of head found on most tripods when you purchase them is a pan head. Pan heads move on three planes to control panning and front and horizontal tilting. A good quality pan head will allow you to make fine adjustments to your camera position.
If you decide to buy a pan head make sure it has both front and horizontal tilt adjustments. Check to see that all of the adjustment knobs are easy to use and that they don't easily fall off.
Ball Heads
Ball heads consist of a camera mount that is attached to a ball. This ball fits into the section at the bottom of the head like a ball and socket joint. Ball heads are great because they allow you to quickly and easily adjust your camera in all directions.
If you decide to buy a ball head make sure it has the strength to support the weight of all your camera equipment. That should include the weight of your camera body and heaviest lens plus the weight of your flash and any other attachments you might add to your camera.
When looking for a head for your tripod look for something that is light yet durable. You want to be able to carry your tripod around with you easily, but you don't want to get something that will break after only a few uses.
