Improve your sunset photography with these simple tips. These digital photography tips will teach you how to shoot sunset photos. Learn how to capture the beautiful colors of the sunset with your digital camera.
![]() Plan One of the worst things is to see a great sunset and not have your camera with you. Decide which day you want to take a picture of the sunset and be prepared. Take notice of weather and sky conditions in your daily life to help you learn how to predict a beautiful sunset. Find a great location. You need to know where the sun will set and where the perfect location will be. Many times I take my best sunset photos on the beach. The beach provides a good spot for sunset photography because the horizon is unobstructed. Dust, smoke or pollution in the air will make sunsets more colorful because the light reflects in the particles in the air. These hazy days usually provide you with lovely sunsets. Wispy clouds in the sky will give interest to your sunset pictures. Look for these thin clouds in the sky on good days to take pictures of sunsets. Use your tripod. You will have to vary shutter speeds. Sometimes you may have your shutter open for a long time to get the best photo. To avoid camera shake and unnecessary blur use a tripod to keep your camera absolutely still. Be patient. Often times the best moments occur just before the sun dips below the horizon. Exposure Controlling the exposure of your picture will help you get a great photograph of the sunset. The brightness of the sky during a sunset can sometimes trick your camera into underexposing the picture. To avoid this set your camera to shutter priority mode. The longer you leave the shutter open the more light enters into the camera. You can get a good picture of the sunset at various shutter speeds depending on the situation you're in. Take pictures at a variety of shutter speeds to see which ones will give you the best results. When taking pictures of the sunset you can also use exposure bracketing to get good pictures of the sunset. Exposure bracketing will allow your camera to take several pictures at different exposure times all at once. These different exposures will give you pictures with slightly different looks. Composition When taking pictures of a sunset it is good to include points of interest in the foreground. Including something that gives your sunset a sense of place will add to the picture. Silhouettes of trees and other objects will offset the brilliant colors of the setting sun and add a point of focus to the picture. You can also do this with interesting clouds in your picture. Most of the time putting the sun in the center of your picture is not a good idea. Try framing it a bit off center. Use the rule of thirds to help you frame your photo with more visual tension. Other Tips When taking landscape pictures it's usually best to set your camera to a high f-stop number so you can get as much of the scene in focus as possible. Use a tripod to keep your camera steady during long exposures. Taking your pictures in RAW will give you more editing options when you put your picture on your computer.
