A portrait photography career could be a good digital photography career choice if you enjoy working with people and are a natural at making people feel comfortable.

Portrait photographers can take pictures of families, sports teams, individuals, babies and much more. Some portrait photographers specialize in school photos and have a portable studio set-up that they take from school to school.

Most portrait photographers are self employed. They own their own studio space with backdrops, ligthing and props for taking portraits. Others work for large companies. Consider which option would be right for you. Remember that being self-employed means that'll you have to market your services yourself. You'll also have to book appointments, do the accounting for the business and hire and train people to work for you. Working for yourself can be challenging, but I think it's surely worth it.

In order to do well in a portrait photography career, you'll have to have a good grasp of lighting techniques. Many portraits are taken in a studio setting, but they can also be taken on location and outdoors. Knowing your camera well and how to get good pictures in a variety of situations is a must.

You also need an eye for detail. You must know what will make a good picture. In most instances, your portrait photos will have to be more salable than artsy. Knowing what will make clients happy and the types of pictures people what to see will help you be successful.

During a photography session, you must know how to read your subject. Talk to them and try to pick out things about their personality that you can include in the portrait. Getting to know small things about your subject will help you take a portrait that shows a bit of their personality.

My grandfather was a professional portrait photographer. He had a small studio near his home where he photographed mainly families and individuals. There was a small room in the studio that acted as his darkroom. He processed his film and developed prints right there on the premisses. With digitial photography you don't have ot worry about darkroom space. Renting out a single room for you're studio would work just fine.

The salary people recieve for a portrait photography career may vary. If you're self-employed you have ulitimate controll over how much you work and how much you earn.

Photography tends to be a competetive field in general, but if you know what you want and work hard a it you can succeed. People will always want professional portraits taken of them. You just need to convince them that you're the right one to take those photographs.
