A Digital Photography Career
Photojournalism careers are popular choices for people looking for a digital photography career. Working in photography careers can be rewarding and exciting, but it's also a competitive line of work.
If you have a passion for photography and current events this career may be suited for you. Even though working in this field may be competitive, if it's your passion you shouldn't let that discourage you.
Photojournalism careers could include working with your local newpaper or working with internationally known magazines. Some popular publications, like National Geographic, are well known for the photography included in their pages.
In order to become a photojournalist you must be highly skilled at using your camera. You need a good quality DSLR and you must know how to work it properly. You also need to be skilled at photo editing. Having an eye for breathing photographs that tell a story is also quite important.
This profession requires you to get out and work with people. If you prefer not interacting with people this isn't the type of work you should do. You will get told no quite often, but you need to have the persistence required to get that great shot.
Telling a story with your photo is important. Photographs included in news publications need to convey something about the new story it represents. You have to have a good eye for the details that will tell the story behind the picture.
Most colleges with a photography department will offer courses in photojournalism. You should also be able to take these courses in any photography school. Studying traditional journalism along with your photography studies will also prepare you for your future career.
While school really helps a lot, you don't have to have a degree to get work in this field. Some excellent photographers are self-taught.
Photojournalism careers require you to go to areas where news in breaking. You'll need to be flexible. You're schedule will most probably change abruptly depending on what's going on in the local area. You'll have to know how to edit your photos. You'll also have to be able to write excellent captions that are clear, accurate and spelled correctly.
In this career, you need a certain boldness. You'll need to be unafraid of going up to strangers and taking their pictures.
One of the best ways to get into this field is to do an internship. Internships are done for free or with a small stipend paid. You'll get to work with a photojournalist already working with that publication. Even though an internship is unpaid, you need to treat it like you would a normal job. Being professional and always producing your best work is important. If you do well you could get a job at that publication. Even if that doesn't happen an internship looks really good on your resume when you do look for a job.
This career won't necessarily make you millions. Most photojournalists are freelancers getting their work published in a variety of publications. This means that you really have to have a go getter personality to be successful.
