Photography Tips and Tricks

These photography tips and tricks will help you will help you start taking better pictures. Learning digital photography basics takes time, but as you take more pictures your creativity and technical skills will increase. Check out these simple tips to help you start improving the quality of your photography.

Set Your Camera to Manual Mode

The first of the photography tips and tricks I have to share with you is set your camera on manual mode whenever you can. You'll find that the ability to control settings on your camera and not relying on your camera to choose those settings for you will give you higher quality pictures. Set your ISO, white balance and aperture manually. You'll make plenty of mistakes at first, but once you get used to doing it you'll be able to set your camera to get the exact pictures you want.

I find this to be particularly important when it comes to setting your camera's aperture. A clear difference between a very amateurish looking picture and a professional looking one can often be seen in the background. Most of the time when your camera is set to auto mode it will keep a wide depth of field with everything in focus. If you control your aperture you can set a shallow depth of field throwing the background out of focus for portraits and other close up shots of objects. These simple photography tips and tricks will improve the look of your portraits.

Think Before You Shot

Take a minute to plan your picture before you press the shutter button. Imagine what you want your picture to look like and ask yourself these questions. What story are you trying to tell? What's in the background and foreground of the frame? Do you want to include any of those objects? Do they detract from or add to the story you're trying to tell? How's the lighting? Should you use a flash? Is there any thing in the background that will reflect the flash?

Taking some time to answer these questions will help you approach your photography with a sense of purpose. When you don't know what exactly you're trying to convey it can be difficult to take pictures with a clear focus.

Take Lots of Pictures

Practice makes perfect and digital photography makes it easy for photographers to take lots and lots of pictures. You don't have to worry about running out of film. As long as you have enough extra memory you're fine. Unlike rolls of film memory cards can hold hundreds of pictures.

Take your camera with you on outings and take pictures. Dedicate time each day to taking pictures. Most of the pictures you take aren't going to be any good. That's fine. That's true of all photographers. Amongst all those bad pictures that you'll have to get rid of there are bound to be some gems. The more pictures you take the more gems you'll get.

Give Yourself an Assignment

Sometimes it's difficult to start taking pictures. You may look around and feel completely uninspired. If this happens to you don't worry. I've found that giving myself a daily photo assignment helps keep me motivated for taking pictures. The assignments don't have to be difficult. They can be simple things like take a picture of a car, photograph something blue, or photograph happiness. Giving yourself an assignment gives you a challenge. You'll start looking around for a picture that fulfills that assignment.

Have Fun

This is the most important of the photography tips and tricks. Photography is fun. Don't put too much pressure on yourself or beat yourself up when you don't get the shot you wanted. Enjoy the process and you'll get some wonderful pictures and some great memories.
