Head

Having your subject tilt their head slightly to the left or right will give the picture a more relaxed feel. Bringing the head slightly forward will minimize the appearance of a double chin. Having your subject look up slightly will also minimize the appearace of a double chin.

Don't just take pictures with your subject looking directly into the camera. Have them look to either side or even slightly above the camera. Experimenting with different head and eye positions will give you more of a varitey of shots to choose from at the end of your photo session.

Shoulders

When you're taking a headshot the shoulders are the broadest area of the body. This means that they can become quite dominant in a photo. You can angle the shoulders to set the tone of a picture. Having one shoulder lower than the other can help minimize the dominance of the shoulders. You can also angle your subject so that one shoulder is closer to the camera and one farther away. The closer shoulder should also be the lower of the two shoulders.

Cutting one shoulder out of the picture completely can also make a good effect that will add to the look of the portrait.

Always make sure your subjecst has their shoulders pulled back and their upper back straight so they don't look slouchy in the photograph.

Bust

You can emphasize the bustline by having your subject arch their upper back slightly. Having them cross their arms, hold their hands together just below the waist, or lean slightly forward will emphasize cleavage.

If you want to de-emphasize a large bustline have your subject lean back slightly, keep their arms at their side, or even do a pose with their arms overhead.

Waist

Here are some photography posing tips to help give your subject a slimmer appearance. Even if your subject is quite thin having them hold their stomach in just a little bit will give it a more toned appearance that will look better in the photograph.

Having them turn their waist slightly will also give a slimming effect. Have your subject turn their lower body away from the camera slightly with the upper body turned towards the camera.

Legs

A common way to position the legs for a portrait is with the back foot pointing at an angle away from the camera and the front foot pointing towards the camera. The weight of the body is resting on the back foot. This standing position naturally makes the subject twist their waist and is quite natural looking.

If you want to give the appearance of slimmer thighs have the subject stand with one leg crossed over the other.
