How to Find Your Photographic Style

Finding your photographic style can be difficult and even frustrating at times. When you first start taking pictures you struggle to get the basics of composition right. Learning your camera modes can be overwhelming at times and figuring out when to use certain settings fills your mind so that you don't have much room to think of anything else.

Once you get the technical aspects of photography down you'll probably find yourself wondering what you can do to improve your photography even further. One of the most obvious ways is to find your own photographic style. If you look at the pictures taken by well-known photographers you can notice a common look to their photographs. You may even notice recurring themes. These recurring themes and styles mark their unique photographic style. Finding a style is something that many artists struggle with.

Study other photographer's evolution of style?

Every photographer starts somewhere. No one started off with a unique style from the beginning. Every photographer had to develop their unique vision. Photo sharing sites like Flickr make this development of style in photographers easier to track. Go to some of your favorite photographers' pages on Flickr and look back at the first pictures that photographer uploaded on the site. Often times you can see the evolution of their photographic vision as you look through their photographs in chronical order.

Seeing the development of another's style can give you confidence about how to develop a style of your own. You can see what aspects of early pictures they use over and over again to help them develop their vision.

How can you find your style?

Your style will come with time. You can begin to develop your style by taking different types of pictures over time. Through experimenting with different techniques and styles you'll eventually find something that resonants with you. You'll feel inspired to incorporate it into more and more of your images. You'll feel the need to develop it further. As you do your style will emerge.

The best way to find your style is to take as many pictures as your can daily. Notice which of your pictures you like and what elements of photography you want to work with even more.

You can't rush this evolution of style. It will simply begin to happen. Instead of worrying about what your style is, enjoy taking pictures. Learn as much as you can about the mechanics of photography. Study composition. Be fearless with your pictures. As you are you'll notice your style developing.

You may have already developed a style that you don't even notice yet. Look at a group of your past pictures together. Do you see any common threads? Do you have common themes that you work with?
