How to Capture Motion Blur

motion blur

How many times have you seen a picture like the one above and wondered how you could achieve the same effect? This effect is called motion blur and it's a great way to show movement in your photos. Here are some tips to help you take a similar picture.

In order to get blur like this in your picture the first thing you'll need is a tripod. It's important that while the subject of the picture is moving your camera is not. Securing your camera on a tripod will make sure you don't get any camera shake that will distort the picture.

When you're trying to take a picture that captures motion blur you need to have your shutter open for a few seconds. If your shutter speed is set too fast you'll stop the motion and won't end up with the blur you want. Set your camera to manual or shutter priority mode so you can adjust the shutter speed. The amount of time you need to shutter to be open for will depend on the speed of your subject.

When you have the shutter open for a long period of time you may find that the picture gets overexposed. You can compensate for overexposure by setting your camera to a smaller aperture or higher f-stop number. Changing the aperture will make the opening to the lens smaller letting less light into the camera.

You can also compensate by changing the ISO setting. If you set your camera to a lower ISO the sensor will be less sensitive to light so having the shutter open for longer won't cause the picture to be overexposed.

The use of motion blur doesn't have to be limited to fast objects like cars or runners. You can use motion blur in any situation where there is movement.
