Let's look at some simple element you can use to help tell a story in your photographs and add visual interest to you photos.

Focus

You can use focus to help draw the viewer into your photo visually. Throwing background objects out of focus will help the viewer's attention to center on the primary subject in the photo. This is especially important to do if you are taking a picture against a busy background that may distract from your subject.

You can achieve this affect by setting your camera to have a shallower depth of field. The depth of field is controlled by your camera's aperture. The lower the number the aperture is set to the shallower the depth of field will be.

Perspective

Here's a free digital photography tutorial about prespective. Changing the perspective you shoot an image from can greatly affect the mood of the picture. Photographing a person or object from a low angle looking up at it will give the illusion of height. If you want to portray the object or person as large and powerful this is a great way to do it. You can also shoot down on an object or person to make them appear smaller.

When photographing small children or animals try taking pictures of them at their level. Too often people take pictures of small children and animals from above. Getting down on their level will help you get clearer imagines of their eyes and will also allow the camera to see the world as they see the world.

Changing the perspective of your pictures will help do a lot to change the look of them. Sometimes I'll take pictures of a person or object from a varied number of perspective so I have a lot of choices to pick from later.

Color

Color plays an important role in your photography if you're taking color pictures. The colors used in your pictures can lead the eye giving the viewer clues as to what is most visually important in your picture. Different colors have different effects on the viewer. Warmer colors like red, orange, and yellow generally add more weight to a photo than cooler colors like blue and green. Adding a pop of a heavy color will attract the eye to that area of the photo.

If their are too many different colors scattered around the same photo it can be visually confusing.

Repeating Patterns

Repeating patterns can also give you an interesting photograph. When using repeated patterns instead of focusing on one specific object in the picture you're focusing on a continuing theme in shape or color throughout the picture.
