Digital Photography Schools
Choosing Where to Learn Digital Photography
Attending digital photography schools could help you gain the skills needed to improve your photography more quickly. There are many digital photography classes offered at art schools. You can even learn digital photography through online photography courses. Knowing what to look for when choosing a school will ensure you end up attending the best school for you.
When looking for a digital photography school there are a few things you need to keep in mind.
Know your goals
Why do you want to take digital photography classes? What do you want to achieve with your digital photography?
If you're looking to become a professional photographer, you'll want more options and advanced training than someone who just wants to brush up on photography skills for fun. This will determine whether you should attend a specialized school geared towards art and photography or just take some photography classes at the local community college.
Specialization
Part of knowing your goals is knowing what you want to specialize in, then finding the digital photography schools that offer courses in those subjects. Most quality schools will offer photography classes in fashion photography, photojournalism, architectural photography, nature photography, portraits, advertising photography, and more. They will offer a wide variety of commerical and art photography courses. Knowing what you are interested in will help you choose a school that is best for that particular field of photography.
Curriculum
Good schools should offer practical and theoretical training in a lot of different fields. The courses should allow you to get out and take pictures and give you hands on experience with photo editing programs like Photoshop and with studio lighting techniques.
You can check a school's crriculum online. Go to the school's website and see what classes they offer. You'll also be able to see an outline of what that particular class covers during a semester.
Look around
If you're planning on attending a school and not just take online photography courses be sure to tour the campus. Take a look at the school and see first hand what kind of facilities they offer. Arrange to meet with photography students there to find out what they think of the program. Arrange to sit in on classes. Look for small class sizes. Smaller classes give you more one on one attention from the instructor. Ask plenty of questions and be honest about your expectations. If the school doesn't live up to your standards find some place else. School is quite expensive and you want to spend your money attending a school that's right for you.
Plan
Many photographers work for themselves. You should suppliment your artistic education with an education in business. You need to know how to run a business, manage money, and deal with your taxes as a self-employed person.
Remember that photograpy schools aren't the only options for learning about photography. There are photography classes offered at most colleges, including community colleges. You can also take photography classes at photography stores, art centers and online.
