Digital Camera Tips

These digital camera tips will help operate your digital camera to its fullest to get the best pictures possible. Discover the digital camera basics that will help you take great pictures here.

Before you get started you must learn everything you can learn about how to work your specific camera. Read your camera's manual thoroughly. I know it can be a bore, but reading it will help you know how to adjust settings and will give you a clear understanding of your camera's capabilities.

ISO

Your ISO setting determines how sensitive the sensor is to light. Try to set your ISO to the lowest possible setting in each situation you find yourself taking pictures in. The higher the ISO the more sensitive your sensor is to light, but these high ISO settings will also give you a picture that isn't clear or contains what is referred as noise. These distortions distract from the look of the image.

If you are outside on a sunny day set your ISO to 100. This low setting will give you crystal clear images that will look great even at larger sizes. When you have less light available to you, you'll probably have to turn the ISO up a bit, but always try to keep it as low as you can.

White Balance

On your camera, white balance is usually denoted with pictures of various conditions you may be photographing in. Usually there is a picture of a sun, clouds, light bulb, and fluorescent bulb. There is also an auto setting and a custom setting. Out of ease of use you may be tempted to keep your white balance on auto and forget about it. I challenge you to turn off auto and set your white balance yourself. This gives you more control over the image. Sometimes your auto white balance may make mistakes. If you set it yourself you'll be sure to get the correct color in all of your pictures.

Resolution

You can set your camera to take pictures at varying resolutions. Take pictures at the highest image quality your camera can take. You'll find that you can't get many pictures on the memory that camera with your camera if you do that. That's why it is important to purchase a new memory card with more storage capability when you buy your camera. Taking high quality pictures will ensure that your images will look equally as good when you print them out as they do on your computer.

Composition

Work on the composition of your pictures. Try taking pictures from different angles. Take pictures from down low or up high. Include some foreground or some background. Think of each photograph as a story. What do you want to tell the viewer about the subject your photographing?

Simplicity is another important aspect of composition. Don't put too much in a picture. Your viewer must know where to look in the image. Use composition rules like the rule of thirds to help you compose your photograph.

Avoid using digital zoom. If you can get closer to your subject get closer.

Avoid cropping in editing software. Try to compose the picture when you're taking it not after. Cropping your picture in an editing program will take away from the quality of the image.
