Digital Black and White Photography

Digital black and white photography can produce beautiful and expressive pictures. Many stunning portraits and landscape photos are in black and white. These digital photography tips will help you improve your black and white photography.

Contrast

Look for contrast. Because this type of photography covers spectrums of gray a good picture really needs contrast to pop. If the picture will be too much of one color you will be in danger of getting a picture that is very gray and flat looking. Contrast in the picture will help images stand out and look very clear and crisp. Including elements of light and shadow can really make great digital black and white photography.

Texture

In digital black and white photography there is no color. Since you can't depend on color to attrack the eye of the viewer you need to use other elements to make your photo interesting. Textures can be used to add interest to black and white photography. You can use your photographs to emphasize the differences in surfaces.

ISO

The ISO number is a measure of how sensitive the sensor in your camera is to light. The higher the ISO number the more grain will appear in the final picture. In most instances you should set your camera's ISO setting as low as you possibly can while still getting a good picture. You can add grain to the picture in editing software after the picture is taken if that's the effect you want.

Shoot on Overcast Days

Pictures taken on overcast days can be disappointing in color. When the day is very cloudy and any color photogaphy will look gray, try making those pictures black and white. You don't have to leave your camera at home just because the weather isn't ideal.

Shoot in Color

If you are shooting your pictures in jpeg shoot in color. Shooting in color gives you more control over the look of the picture. You can change the picture to black and white in a photo editing program after the picture is taken. This is preferable because it gives you more control over the look of the picture.

If you are shooting in RAW--which you really should be doing if you can--you can shoot pictures in black and white mode. The pictures will display on your LCD screen in black and white so you can see what they look like but the RAW files will really be in color. The pictures can be altered in post production.

Conculsion

Using these tips will help you improve your black and white photograpy. Remember that when taking black and white pictures you need to focus on on textrue and contrast. Taking pictures that focus on detail will also help improve your photography.
